“We have been advised by apparently well-informed persons that insofar as people in Poland are concerned it is of the utmost importance that no word of the issuance of such passports should reach the German authorities, & that if passports are to be made available to such persons, they should be transmitted through secret channels which are known to us…. Attached hereto is a list of fifteen families together with such biographical data as is available to us.”

(excerpts from: a War Refugee Board letter of July 4, 1944 to the Secretary of State; HIAS Emigration Assoc. to War Refugee Board)

“In confirmation of the Embassy’s telegram No. 2054,
July 1, 1944, 1 p.m., I have the honor to report that on
June 26 and 27, 1944, a group of thirty-two Hungarian
Jewish capitalists and industrialists arrived in Lisbon,
without previous warning, accompanied by their families.
A list of the names of the members of this group, together
with the number and date of the passports issued to the
heads of the families, is attached hereto….”:



“… detained on German territory (not in Hungary), as hostages & as the price of silence, Baron Alphonse,--the husband of Elizabeth Weiss--& a son & daugter-in-law of Baron Moric Kornfeld….”

“In Vienna there remained as hostages Hana (Hans?) Muetner, Baron Alfons Weiss, George S. Kornfeld, wife & children.” (from AMLEGATION, Bern. 7/24,1944, to Sec’y of State, Washington)

According to the article, “ The following list is based on the proceeding of the Extraordinary (?) State Commission to investigate crimes committed by the Nazi invaders, the book ‘Memory. Mstislavsky Area’, other published documents & memoirs of eyewitnesses and the testimony....” 

The article is in Russian.  I did not include document numbers, which are a part of the original list. People with the same last name may or may not be related.
