1880-1919 NERCHINSK PENAL COLONY: Some Names

1880-1919 NERCHINSK PENAL COLONY: Some Names
F. OFFICE OF THE TRANSBAIKAL REGIONAL BOARD (NERCHIN) & THE MILITARY GOVERNOR OFTHE TRANSBAIKAL REGION. Chita. Op. 2. Personal Files of Exiled Convicts. 1880-1919 gg.

The quality of a laborer well well depended well on the type of settlement to which he or she was sent and the kind of labor that was assigned. Some of the most dreaded exilic locations, such as Kara, Nerchinsk , and Sakhalin, emphasized mine work. Prisoners who worked in mines usually spent their days in dank tunnels full of coal dust that choked the lungs, and their nights in prisons that were old, overcrowded, and filthy. Traveler travelers of numerous European travelers describe the filthiness and disease that flourished in such environments. Alternatively, sometimes political exiles were entrusted to small villages or Indigenous groups all of whom, the tsar's gendarme warned them, would have been executed if the prisoner escaped.Numerous nineteenth-century photographs of Siberian hard labor exiles show them living in isolation on the vast steppe in rudimentary dwellings such as huts, dugouts, caves, and in tents along rivers.

The Nerchinsk Penal Colony was disbanded after the 1917 February Revolution. After Soviet power was firmly established in the Trans-Baikal region, buildings were partially torn down & used for other purposes.
