1889-1892 ODESSA: SOCIETY FOR THE AID TO JEWISH LANDOWNERS & ARTISANS IN SYRIA & PALESTINE

 Society for the Aid to Jewish Landowners & Artisans in Syria & Palestine

The Society for the Aid to Jewish Landowners...... was "established for the solely charitable purpose of encouraging the settlers in Syria & Palestine, Jews to [do] productive (mainly agricultural) work. To achieve this, the Society provides settlers who devote themselves to handicraft and especially agricultural labor, benefits, both with money and with the necessary agricultural and craft tools...." [ funds not for travel expenses] 

As required by the order of November 2, 1889, # 14236, the Odessa mayor was to collect information about the property status, rank, and occupation of persons wishing to be founders of the Society. They included: 

Medical doctors: Benyamin Shersheeskiy, Lev Federmeyer, Moris Shmeyner, & Gregory Gimmelfarb, without material support.

Odessa merchants, engaged in trade & crafts: Yakov Lyubarskiy, Samuil Rabinovich, Solomon Berg, & Usher Gintsberg (a merchant's son). The financial situation of these persons was mediocre.

Additional merchants, also engaged in commerce; & owned their own houses in Odessa of considerable value: Leon Filkenshteyn [Fipkenshteyn?], Gersh Pogrebynskiy, Markus Ostrovskiy, Ioul Gimmelfarb, Srul Fumran, & Mark Vaynshteyn (bourgeoisie).

Honorary Citizens: Solomon Barzhanskiy, Vulf Konstantinovskiy

1st Guild Merchants: owned real estate that generated income of about 50,000 R. each & exported grain products abroad: 

Nukhim Granat, Solomon Purits, Barzhanskiy, Konstantinoeskiy. They engaged in trade, had valuable contracts, and owned fairly valuable houses in the city.
