1881 WARSAW POGROM: Some Victims

1881 WARSAW POGROM: Some Victims

BACKGROUND:
“December 25, 1881, during ongoing in the church of St. Cross Mass of Christmas, heard the cry of "Gore" [“Fire”??]. Frightened … the faithful began to flee towards the exit. In the confusion and panic trampled to death 20 people. It turned out that the fire risk was false. Among the crowd was rumored that cry, which aroused panic, came from the mouth of a Jewish pickpocket, who caught stealing, wanted to divert the attention. Rumor had caused a sharp rise in anti-Jewish sentiments. About three o'clock in the afternoon, the crowd began to smash windows in Jewish shops in the surrounding area of the church at the Krakow suburb, also assaulted passers-Jewish origin. Information on the riots quickly spread in the city, about five o'clock in the afternoon the attackers joined by people from other parts of Warsaw. The sharpest course were riots Prague.” (https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pogrom_warszawski_w_1881 )

I copied the following from a short article appearing in a Polish language newspaper. It refers to victims and what happened to some of them at the beginning of the Warsaw pogrom of December, 1881 on Christmas Day. I typed the info. without the original's special accents or letters:
"Nieszczesliwe ofiary smutnego wypadku w kosciele przeniesiono w czesci do nowej taniej kuchni, a w czesci do szpitali Dziciatka Jezus i S-go Rocha. Dia niesienia ratunku poranionym wielu pospiezylo lekarzow. Czynnymi byli bezustannie: d-rzy:
(NAMES LISTED)
Dzieki ich ratunkowi dzielnimu z 22 oflar zywych jeszczas, przyniesionych do szpitali, zmarla dotychczas tylko jedna. Zwloki osob, ktore w tloku smierc poniosly, umieszczono w grabarni."

My thanks to Henry Boryczewski who translated the information on Facebook for me:

“… an ‘unfortunate sad accident in a church’. …the victims were taken to the hospital of the Infant Jesus and Saint Rocha. Many doctors came to their aid. There were 22 survivors and 1 person died so far. The body was taken to the morgue.”
