VILNIUS JEWISH MERCHANTS (#2)

VILNIUS JEWISH MERCHANTS (#2)
(from Vilnius Jewish Merchants, 1801-1861, Aelita Ambruleviciute, 2012)

The information was based on documents from the Lithuanian State Historical Archive, merchant certificates compiled by the Duma of the city (1809-1861), 1801 customs book, and other resources.

According to the book, the birth date may not always be accurate, in which case, two or three possibilities are offered. There is a variation of name spelling as well.

Merchants who received special consideration as  “honorary citizen, exempted them from poll taxes and permitted them to run for public offices, etc. Additionally, they were allowed to ride in carriages, visit the tsar’s court, carry a court sword, live in Moscow and St. Petersburg, and be exempted from military duty. (A. Ambruleiciute).

 The list only includes family members living in the same residence, and therefore, does not necessarily reflect the complete family composition.

This is only a partial list!!

     s.=son(s)                                                  a. grandson; granddaughter
    d.=daughter(s)                                           ss. sister(s)
    m.=mother                                              b.=brother(s)
    gm.=grandmother

    “noble” goods: items designed for the nobility class (ex. silk, wool, cotton, baize, fur, etc.)
    “red” goods:  “noble” goods sold in linear measures.
    “vegetable” goods:  ”… foodstuffs such as sausages, peas, mushrooms, dried plums, olives, halva, etc.”
